What are OTC hearing aids?

OTC (over-the-counter) hearing aids are hearing aids designed for adults age 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.

They can be bought online or in stores without a prescription, fitting appointment, or in-person visit with a hearing professional.

Some OTC models offer simple preset controls, while others offer self-fitting features through apps or software.

OTC hearing aids may be a good fit if you:

  • are 18 or older
  • feel that speech is becoming harder to hear
  • want a more affordable and accessible option

You should talk to a doctor or hearing professional if you have:

  • sudden hearing loss
  • pain, drainage, or dizziness
  • severe hearing difficulty
  • one ear that is much worse than the other
