When should I see a doctor instead of using OTC hearing aids?

OTC hearing aids can help many adults, but some symptoms need medical evaluation first.

See a doctor promptly if

  • your hearing changed suddenly or has been getting worse quickly
  • you have pain, drainage, bleeding, or fluid from the ear
  • you have dizziness or spinning sensations
  • one ear hears much worse than the other
  • you think something is in your ear or you may have significant earwax blockage
  • the hearing aid causes pain when you insert or wear it

If you are unsure, err on the side of getting medical advice first.
