Feedback or Whistling with Nexus

If your Nexus hearing aid is producing feedback or whistling noises, follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Is the Hearing Aid Properly Fitted?

  • Feedback often occurs when the hearing aid is not seated securely in your ear.
  • Check the Fit:
    • Ensure the ear tip or dome is fully inserted into your ear canal.
    • If it feels loose, consider using a different size ear tip or dome for a better seal.

2. Are the Ear Tips or Domes Damaged or Worn?

  • Over time, ear tips can wear out, affecting the fit and seal.
  • Inspect for Damage:
    • Look for tears, cracks, or wear on the ear tip or dome.
    • Replace the ear tip if necessary.

3. Is There Wax or Debris Blockage?

  • Wax buildup can cause sound to bounce back, creating feedback.
  • Clean the Device:
    • Check the ear tip, sound tube, and microphone ports for blockages.
    • Use the cleaning tools provided with your hearing aid to remove wax and debris.

4. Is the Volume Too High?

  • High volume settings can amplify sound and cause feedback.
  • Lower the Volume:
    • Reduce the volume slightly and check if the whistling stops.

5. Are You Covering the Hearing Aid?

  • Covering the hearing aid with your hand, hair, or a hat can cause feedback.
  • Avoid Obstruction:
    • Keep objects away from the hearing aid to prevent sound from bouncing back.

6. Is the Hearing Aid Program Correct?

  • Certain programs may amplify specific frequencies, increasing the chance of feedback.
  • Switch Programs:
    • Use the program button or Ceretone app to switch to a mode like Normal or Outdoor that may reduce feedback.

7. Is the Sound Tube or Receiver Secure?

  • A loose or damaged sound tube or receiver can cause sound leakage.
  • Check and Secure:
    • Ensure the sound tube is tightly connected to the hearing aid and the ear tip.
    • Replace the sound tube if it is cracked or loose.

8. Are You Using the Right Ear Tip Size?

  • Ear tips that are too small may not create a proper seal, leading to feedback.
  • Try a Different Size:
    • Test larger or custom-molded ear tips to improve the fit.

9. Is the Hearing Aid Damaged?

  • Internal damage to the hearing aid can cause persistent feedback.
  • Inspect for Damage:
    • Look for visible cracks or loose components.
    • Contact your hearing care provider if you suspect internal damage.

10. Have You Tried the Dehumidifier?

  • Moisture inside the device can also lead to feedback issues.
  • Dry the Hearing Aid:
    • Place it in a hearing aid dehumidifier or a sealed container with silica gel overnight.
